Canada Prairies Prognosticator

Inside this edition of the Canadian Prairies Agricultural Weather Prognosticator there is an editorial comment about "super" El Nino and how the media has blown the coming El Nino event way out of proportion. The event will be a threat to southern Asia, Australia and central Africa as well as a few other areas, but Canada's Prairies has no statistical evidence of serious anomalous weather during the summer of a developing El Nino no matter how strong or weak is is. An updated outlook for June and July and August is provided in this newsletter along with a quick assessment of soil moisture in key crop areas around the world. There are also two articles in this prognosticator regarding the weather across the Prairies during May and the coming weather in June. Two other special reports are in this issue; including an update on European soil moisture and the drying that is occurring in France and an update on Australia's better than expected autumn rainfall that has ensured a good start to the 2026 wheat, barley, canola and pulse growing season.

Inside this edition of the Canadian Prairies Agricultural Weather Prognosticator where is an update on early season fieldwork potentials. A snowstorm April 24-25 produced significant snowfall in parts of the Prairies pushing back the earliest date for fieldwork to begin in some areas quite a bit. The storm marked the end of an unsettled period and came with notable coolness. Now the Prairies will begin a period of recovery with slowly warming temperatures over the next ten days and more limited precipitation. The first half of May will be drier biased while late May trends wetter again with June the wettest. An update on June weather continues to suggest that will be the wettest month so far this season for some southern areas. A special story regarding the El Nino event coming up is in this edition with some special time devoted toward cutting the hype over "super El Nino.

Inside this issue of the Canadian Prairies Agricultural Weather Prognosticator is an update on the spring and summer weather outlook and an update on January/February precipitation across the Prairies. Updates on soil moisture for selected production areas around the world are included in this issue along with a note about U.S. Midwest and Delta drought relief. Commentary regarding Brazil's soil moisture and outlook for Safrinha corn is included in this newsletter along with an update about the lack of weather change slated for Canada in March. Argentina's weather improved recently limiting the impact of its yield losses on the marketplace and an update on wheat production areas in North Africa, Europe and Asia is also included in this month's assessment.
