Former Soviet Union Has Ample Moisture; Planting Sluggish

Kansas City, June 5 (World Weather Inc.) – Waves of rain were noted in Russia, Ukraine, and neighboring areas in the former Soviet Union in recent weeks. The rain has helped support good growth for the winter grains and oilseeds and relatively good establishment for the summer grains and oilseeds. However, plating is lagging behind or well behind normal in parts of Russia due to the rain and cooler than usual weather. Drier weather is slated for portions of western Russia, Russia’s USDA defined ‘Southern Region’, the Volga River Basin, and immediate neighboring areas in eastern Ukraine and western Kazakhstan through the end of next week. The lack of abundant rain will help firm the ground and could promote more aggressive planting. Other locations in the former Soviet Union will have several opportunities for rain that may continue to limit aggressive fieldwork.

Brazil’s Projected Mid-Month Rain In Line With El Nino

Kansas City, June 5 (World Weather Inc.) – Dry biased weather has been dominating key Safrinha corn and cotton areas of Brazil for the past few weeks. These conditions are great for maturing crops and supporting their harvest. Many computer forecast model runs recently have been suggesting broad-based rainfall will impact these production areas in the next week to ten days. The rain seems so unusual for a typical year, but there is an amazingly high degree of correlation between aggressively developing El Nino events and wet weather in southern Brazil and parts of center west during June and July. That makes the predicted rain event seem less unusual and more likely to verify. The impact will mostly be to slow crop maturation and harvest progress, but there may be a small part of the maturing cotton crop that could experience some negative impact.
