West Texas Received Timely Rain; Much More Needed

Kansas City, June 4 (World Weather Inc.) – Planting of cotton, sorghum, corn, and other crops is advancing across West Texas and neighboring areas. Timely rain during the past week marginally bolstered soil moisture and may have improved short-term establishment conditions. There is still a need for much more rain to completely break the drought and support ideal long-term production potentials. West Texas will have a few opportunities for erratic rain and isolated thunderstorms during the next few days. Resulting rainfall will be too light to counter evaporation. Establishment and development conditions may deteriorate, especially for dryland areas. Other cotton areas in Texas will see a mix of rain and sunshine as well. Cotton prospects are relatively favorable in the Blacklands region while conditions are more variable for South Texas and the Coastal Bend.

South Africa Harvest Will Advance Swiftly In Coming Weeks

Kansas City, June 4 (World Weather Inc.) – Weather conditions in South Africa this growing season have been mostly very good. Corn, soybeans and sunseed have all been singled out as performing better than usual and the corn production estimate is far enough above domestic consumption that exports will be above average. Not much weather adversity lies ahead for the remaining crop. Restricted rainfall should support good maturation and harvest prospects and that is true for cotton and other crops as well. In the meantime, wheat, barley and canola planting, emergence and establishment has likely gone well and recent rain in the southwest has helped to ensure a well-established crop which is so important since El Nino may stress the crops in the spring and summer.
