Russia, Ukraine Winter Crop Areas Need More Rain

Kansas City, September 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Early-season planting and establishment conditions for Russia’s USDA defined ‘Southern Region’ and Volga River Basin are less than favorable as the ground remains dry. Spotty rain since the start of the month has not been enough to reverse the dryness and promote good planting prospects. Other production areas in the former Soviet Union received timely rain during the past week, which was beneficial for any producers that are planting. Ukraine, Belarus, and western Russia will see a good mix of rain and sunshine during the coming week that will further support good early-season planting. Precipitation will be variable across Russia’s Volga River Basin and ‘Southern Region’ with most locations not receiving enough precipitation to fix the moisture deficits. The need for more significant rain will be high late this month into October as more crops go in the ground.

Tropical Storm Dujuan To Intensify; May Clip Japan

           Kansas City, September 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Storm Dujuan formed over the western Pacific Ocean earlier this week. The disturbance will track near or over Iwo To, Japan Friday morning while tracking farther to the west-northwest. A more northerly shift in the disturbance is expected late Friday and Saturday before shifting farther to the northeast later this weekend and early next week, briefly becoming a typhoon. While Tropical Storm Dujuan may not make landfall over Japan, the disturbance will be close enough to promote significant rain in southeastern Honshu, Japan, including Tokyo. Flash flooding and a dangerous storm surge will be possible and may impact ocean travel. Rice harvesting may also be disrupted in areas that receive the greatest amount of rain.
