Southeast Australia Frost, Light Freezes Have Low Impact

Kansas City, September 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and light freezes occurred this morning in southeastern Australia. The impact of cold weather in the region should have been low, although an assessment of the situation will occur over the next few days. Another frosty night is expected tonight and freezes may return to Victoria Monday. The bottom line for most crops should not be serious, although until a full assessment is complete there will be some concern.

Center West Brazil Rain Supports Limited Soybean Planting

Kansas City, September 16 (World Weather, Inc.) – Significant rain during the first half of September in center west Brazil was erratically distributed leaving some areas with notable increases in soil moisture while rain was minimal in other areas. Following the rain, some producers planted soybeans early in hopes that the crop will be mature enough to withstand potential periods of El Nino-enhanced dry weather in October and November. A close watch will be made on the rainfall distribution during the next two weeks with rain not likely great enough to support some early-planted soybeans and some replanting may be needed.

China Harvest Weather Stays Mostly Good

Kansas City, September 16 (World Weather Inc.) – A large section of China experienced relatively favorable conditions for maturation and early-season harvesting of the summer grains, oilseeds, cotton, and other crops during the past week. Sichuan and portions of southern China may have seen minor harvest delays due to rain, though production impacts were suspected of being minimal. Precipitation will be variable through the middle of next week. Southern China into Sichuan, Hubei, and neighboring areas will see waves of rain that may continue to slow or delay the harvest. Other production areas will see more favorable conditions for maturation and harvesting. Yield potentials are favorable this season.

Eastern Australia Drying Out As El Nino Influence Strengthens

Kansas City, September 16 (World Weather Inc.) – Winter wheat, barley, and canola potentials remain relatively favorable in southern Australia this season despite ongoing dryness in Queensland and northern New South Wales. The southern production areas received timely rain over much of the winter and early spring and was enough to support aggressive early season growth. Drier-than-usual weather will persist for at least the next seven days in much of the east and temperatures will be trending warmer. Crop moisture stress and some livestock stress is anticipated because of the heat and dryness in unirrigated agricultural areas of Queensland and northern New South Wales. Rain is also needed to support early planting of cotton corn, sorghum and soybeans in Queensland, although there is plenty of time for improvement. Western Australia will be wettest out of all southern crop areas and there will be some need for greater rain in southern New South Wales, Victoria and southeastern South Australia before long.
