Southwest Europe To Receive Much-Needed Rain

Kansas City, February 8 (World Weather Inc.) – A ridge of high pressure dominated western and south-central Europe during the past week to ten days resulting in some warmer and drier biased weather. The ground firmed up in southern France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and neighboring areas in northwest Africa. Drying has been a little too persistent in recent weeks in southern and eastern Spain as well as Morocco and northwestern Algeria raising concern over spring planting moisture and early season winter crop development. Rain is expected to evolve later today through early next week and that should lead to dryness relief and a short term bout of improved soil moisture. More rain will be needed, though. The precipitation coming to Europe should impact much of the continent in time and cooler temperatures will eventually help conserve soil moisture until a new wave of rain begins.

China’s Favorable Winter Weather To Prevail Into March

Kansas City, February 7 (World Weather Inc.) – Varying amounts of rain and snow were noted in eastern China’s winter crop areas during the past week. Hunan, Hubei, and neighboring locations in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and northern Fujian received the greatest amount of precipitation that significantly bolstered soil moisture. The main winter wheat and rapeseed areas have ample moisture to support aggressive growth in early spring once seasonal warming brings crops out of dormancy. In the meantime, portions of southern China would benefit from increased rainfall later this month to support better early-season rice and corn planting. Winter crop production potentials will remain generally good.

Rounds of Precipitation Improve Snowpack in Sierra Nevada

Kansas City, February 8 (World Weather Inc.) – Rounds of significant precipitation have occurred across the state of California, bringing up to 10.00 inches of rain in portions of Southern California. Snowpack in the Sierra Nevada has improved in the past two weeks. Conditions are at 73% of normal for this time of year and 49% of the April 1st average, up from 54% and 31% respectively on January 24. Reservoir levels saw relatively minor improvements and remain in good standing. Dry conditions are expected to return on Friday and last through at least February 16. More precipitation events are possible February 17 and beyond, though total accumulations are not certain at this point in time.
