Western South Africa Summer Crop Areas Need Rain

Kansas City, February 8 (World Weather Inc.) – South Africa’s production areas saw a mix of spotty rain and sunshine during the past week. Precipitation was welcome where it fell and continued to support generally good conditions for corn, soybean, sorghum, cotton, sunseed, sugarcane, citrus and peanut crops. Portions of North West, Free State and eastern portions of Northern Cape are becoming a little too dry in unirrigated fields and crop stress is rising while reproduction and filling is under way for some crops. A boost in rain is needed. Precipitation for at least the next week to ten days will favor eastern South Africa while the western summer crop areas in central portions of the nation will only have a few opportunities for spotty rain. The combination of warm temperatures, limited rain and low soil moisture will stress some dryland crops raising the potential for some yield loss.

Indonesia, Malaysia To Receive Rain; Philippines Needs Moisture

Kansas City, February 8 (World Weather Inc.) – Indonesia and Malaysia received timely rain in recent weeks with some heavy rain and flooding occurring in January. The negative phase of Madden Julian Oscillation has evolved recently to suppress rainfall, but the change to drier biased conditions was welcome after too much rain fell for a little while. In contrast, Luzon Island and Palawan are drier than usual and need moisture to improve off-season crop production. Precipitation will remain lower than normal for at least the next seven days in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia with an expansion of dryness expected. Rain is needed in the northwestern Philippines to protect off season production, but conditions in Indonesia and Malaysia are fine and will remain that way. Mainland Southeast Asia has been seasonally dry in recent weeks and little change is likely.
