Mexico Will Receive Needed Rain Mid-Month; More Needed

Kansas City, February 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Drought or abnormally dry conditions are ongoing in a large section of Mexico. Many areas in northern and pockets of east-central Mexico were wetter than normal during the past month, though not enough precipitation fell to significantly improve the moisture profile. Other locations in Mexico were drier or much drier than normal during the past month. The country will briefly experience increased rainfall toward mid-February in part due to a Madden-Julian Oscillation event that will advance over the Pacific Ocean. The rain will only improve short-term soil conditions in areas that receive the greatest amount of rain. Drought or abnormally dry conditions will otherwise persist and the need for abundant rain will remain high.

Canadian Prairies Snow, Rain Event Encouraging For 2024

Kansas City, February 9 (World Weather Inc.) – A winter storm promoted varying amounts of snow and rain across the Canadian Prairies in recent days. The precipitation event was the most generalized seen in weeks and has encouraged producers that perhaps 2024 will be a better year following recent drought years. Concern was rising over the prospects for continuing drought when the growing season ended with significant moisture deficits still lingering and then a prolonged period of warmer and drier than usual conditions during the autumn and early winter. Much more precipitation will be needed to provide good planting and establishment conditions this spring. Not much follow up precipitation is expected for a while, but at least this week’s moisture will provide some hope for the future.
