Southeast China Rainfall Impacting Early-Season Fieldwork

Kansas City, April 3 (World Weather Inc.) – Warmer weather in recent weeks increased soil temperatures for much of China. Winter rapeseed and wheat have come out of dormancy and have started to develop under generally good conditions. Hebei, Shandong, and Shanxi are a little too dry for ideal long-term wheat conditions and would welcome a boost in rain. However, no major production impacts are suspected as of yet. Planting of the early-season rice may have begun in portions of southern China in recent days as well. However, Yunnan and Guangxi are too dry to support ideal planting and producers may wait until rain increases before putting a significant amount of crop in the ground. Areas near and south of the Yangtze River will have several opportunities for rain through the middle of next week that will bolster soil moisture. Flooding will be possible from Hunan and neighboring areas into Jiangxi, Fujian, and Zhejiang while the North China Plain, central Yellow River Basin, and northern China are generally dry biased.

Eastern Australia Rainfall Boost To Threaten Cotton

Kansas City, April 3 (World Weather Inc.) – Eastern Australia summer crops are being harvested in some areas with much more harvesting to come soon. Rain in this past week was only briefly disruptive, but rain expected Thursday into Saturday in Queensland and New South Wales is expected to be more aggressive. The expected rain will be good for future wheat, barley and canola planting and possibly good for the latest maturing summer crops, but there may be some negative impact on open boll cotton. The rain event is not likely to last long, but some of the precipitation will be heavy and that could result in some concern over the condition of some crops – especially cotton.
