Washington Apple Bloom Should Escape Damage In Cool Spell

Kansas City, April 11 (World Weather Inc.) – A succession of three deep troughs of low pressure will be moving through British Columbia and the U.S. Pacific Northwest during the next ten days dropping temperatures low enough for mountain snow to fall and raising the potential for nighttime frost and freezes “if” the sky cover clears off. Most winter crops will be unaffected by the cold weather, but some of the region’s flowering fruit trees could be seriously impacted if everything goes exactly wrong. Sixty percent of the apples produced in the United States come from Washington State and with flowering getting under way there is “some” concern over the fate of that crop. Cloudiness will be the crops’ friend.

South Africa Early-Season Harvest Likely Sluggish

Kansas City, April 11 (World Weather Inc.) – With harvest set to begin or expand in South Africa this month, waves of rain during the past week may have slowed or delayed the early-season harvest and general fieldwork. Quality impacts were likely minimal, though drier weather is now needed to support better maturation and harvesting. The rain was otherwise too late to significantly improve production potentials The main production areas in eastern and central South Africa will again see a mix of rain and sunshine during the coming week that may keep the harvest pace slow. The moisture will be welcome for winter wheat and barley planting.
