Canadian Prairies Agricultural Weather Prognosticator for April 20, 2024

Inside this issue of the Canadian Prairies Agricultural Weather Prognosticator there is a summary on the big precipitation event that occurred April 16-18 that eased dryness in portions of the eastern Prairies. Updated forecasts for the balance of April and May were included in this issue along with confirmation of no changes to the summer outlook. An assessmnent was made on soil moisture in various locations around the world and there were special reports for the U.S. Midwest, western CIS and Southern China.

Additional Heavy Rain, More Flooding Coming To Southern China

Kansas City, April 22 (World Weather Inc.) – Impressive rainfall has occurred in southern China, as predicted late last week. Rain totals were expected to range from 5.00 to 15.00 inches by the end of this coming week and amounts already reported through Monday morning reached up to 14.45 inches. Since Thursday morning some areas have already had more than 16.00 inches of rain and more is expected after a brief break today. Flood damage to crops and property has likely occurred, although not yet fully assessed and more damage is probably as the excessive rain resumes this week.

East Canada Prairies Precipitation Improves Planting Outlook

Kansas City, April 19 (World Weather Inc.) – Prior to this week there had been only one major winter storm that had impacted the eastern Canadian Prairies this calendar year and that was in early March. Other weather disturbances had come and gone through various portions of the Prairies, but serious drought relief was still lacking and the same is still true today in northern and central Alberta and in a part of south-central and southeastern Saskatchewan. A storm system this week occurring from Tuesday through Thursday brought substantial rain and snow to Manitoba and north-central through northeastern Saskatchewan. Some partial relief from dryness also occurred in the interior west-central parts of Saskatchewan. The week’s precipitation will lead to much improved planting prospects in areas getting moisture while concern over long term dryness continues in parts of the drier areas in the western Prairies.
