Apple Crop Endures Freezing Temperatures Thursday

Kansas City, April 19 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and freezing temperatures were noted in central Washington Thursday morning that may have had a big impact on the nation’s apple crop. Temperatures slipped into the upper 20s and lower 30s Fahrenheit in much of the production region possibly resulting in some damage to spring blossoms. A few extreme lows slipped into the middle 20s, although the duration of such conditions was quite short and the number of areas seeing temperatures below 28 was relatively low. With that said, though, frost was widespread and at least some impact was suspected. Assessing the damage will take a few days and possibly a few weeks when fruit setting normally occurs.

South Africa Harvest Conditions Improving

Kansas City, April 19 (World Weather Inc.) – Spotty rainfall was noted in portions of South Africa’s crop country during the past week improving harvest conditions after abundant rain fell in the previous week. The rain slowed early-season harvesting and raised some fiber quality concerns for cotton, but the drier weather in more recent days greatly improved the situation. The country will generally trend dry during the coming week with temperatures often trending above normal. The environment will be beneficial for aggressive maturation and harvesting. Precipitation will likely remain limited late this month into early May as the harvest starts to expand across the country.
