Southern China Facing Severe Flooding; Crop Damage Possible

Kansas City, May 3 (World Weather Inc.) – Waves of rain fell near and south of the Yangtze River during the past week and some of it was heavy enough to induce flooding. A part of Guangdong, southern Hunan and southern Jiangxi were still recovering from more serious flooding from late April and the additional rain only aggravated the situation. Another week of frequent rain that will be heavy to excessive at times is expected and that will likely translate into some further delay in fieldwork and concern over rapeseed, sugarcane and early corn development conditions. Some crop loss already occurred due to severe flooding in April. In contrast, the North China Plain and central Yellow River Basin will remain drier than normal through the end of next week maintaining concern over planting moisture and winter crop development.

Canada Prairies Drought Easing; More Rain Coming

Kansas City, May 3 (World Weather Inc.) – Much needed rain (and snow) evolved across the Canadian Prairies in recent days. Disturbances tracking around a trough of low pressure aloft promoted varying amounts of precipitation that helped bolster soil moisture in several key crop areas. Another disturbance is slated to bring significant precipitation to portions of the Prairies later this weekend and early next week, most notably in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Drought will be eased and should improve planting potentials. The main concern will be for delayed planting and fieldwork, though without this moisture some of the driest areas would be vulnerable to another poor production year. Standing water and wet topsoil will likely limit aggressive fieldwork in the coming days, though it will not take long for the moisture to percolate down into the dry soil. Improved weather during mid-month will allow farming activity to increase.
