Weekly Citrus Weather for May 7, 2024

Kansas City, May 7 (World Weather Inc.) – Several areas in Florida received spotty rainfall on a frequent basis during the past week. The rain was beneficial for developing fruit and yet briefly disruptive for some harvesting. Drier weather will return during the coming week and should promote more aggressive harvest conditions. Irrigation will continue to be run and maintain a good environment for citrus development. In Brazil, seasonally dry weather evolved during the past week with at least another week of dry weather expected. Maturation and early-season harvesting will advance swiftly. Mexico’s citrus areas will remain drier biased during the coming week despite some spotty rain in the east. Abundant rainfall is still needed across the country to support more favorable production potentials for the upcoming season.

Mainland Southeast Asia, Philippines To See Uptick In Rain

Kansas City, May 6 (World Weather Inc.) – Pre-monsoonal rain evolved in portions of mainland Southeast Asia during the past week with the greatest of moisture fell from Laos into northern and central Vietnam. Pre-monsoonal showers and thunderstorms combined with a weak signal in the Madden-Julian Oscillation will help promote frequent precipitation across the region during the next two weeks. The environment will improve for sugarcane, rice, corn, oil palm, coffee and a host of other crop conditions. Production potentials for 2024 could still end up down for many crops, though timely rainfall of significance in the next few months can still induce much improved crop development.
In the Philippines, only Mindanao received significant precipitation during the past week. Moisture shortages are intensifying across the country and the need for abundant rainfall is high. Some increase in rain is expected especially next week.

Another CIS Cold Surge Due Late This Week

Kansas City, May 6 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and freeze conditions occurred across much of the western Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) during the weekend. Temperatures fell below freezing deeply across western Russia and touched upon northeastern Ukraine and a few western Kazakhstan locations. The cold burned back new vegetative winter crop development, but the odds of seeing a production cut because of the cold is quite low. Another surge of reinforcing cold is expected Thursday and Friday that will drop temperatures below freezing again with some of it getting deeper into Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region. Most of the winter grains and rapeseed are not far enough advanced to be seriously harmed by the cold, but there are some areas in Ukraine and Southern Russia that have been warm enough for a long enough period to raise the potential for a little more impact. In the meantime, dryness remains a concern from eastern Ukraine to Kazakhstan and some partial relief is possible in a part of the region.
