Tropical Storm Over Hainan China Moving Toward Guangxi

Kansas City, July 21 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Storm Trapiroon was located over Hainan, China at 2100 GMT today and was expected to move into Guangxi, China by Monday night. The storm will not intensify much, but rain will be widespread throughout the region from Hainan through western Guangdong and into Guangxi. Damage to agriculture should be limited, but flooding rain could threaten some rice and sugarcane in the region.

Tropical Storm Gaemi To Become Typhoon Near Taiwan

Kansas City, July 21 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Storm Gaemi formed east of the Philippines during the weekend and it was expected to quickly become a typhoon tonight or Monday while moving toward the northeast tip of Taiwan. Landfall is not likely in Taiwan, although heavy rain, flooding and strong wind speeds will impact parts of the nation as the storm brushes the northern coast. The storm will reach a Category Two hurricane equivalent storm prior to reaching northeastern Fujian and southern Zhejiang China Thursday. Rice may be most vulnerable to the storm.

Australia Cooling Supports Winter Crop Semi-Dormancy

Kansas City, July 19 (World Weather Inc.) – Cooling has been occurring in Australia’s wheat, barley and canola production region recently. The combination of low sun angle, reduced hours of daylight and cool daily temperatures has slowed winter crop development enough to induce semi-dormancy. Most of the winter crops are favorably established, despite some moisture shortages recently. The next few weeks will provide an excellent opportunity for further improvement in the moisture profile for crops to use in the early days of spring. The need for rain is greatest in Queensland, although eastern parts of Western Australia and South Australia still have some moisture deficits as well. Plant moisture demand will be low while crops are semi-dormant.

Canadian Prairies Dryness Intensifying; Heat Stress Possible

Kansas City, July 19 (World Weather Inc.) – Abundant rainfall during the planting season delayed planting in several portions of the Canadian Prairies. Crop development conditions have been generally favorable despite the delayed planting, though crop development remains behind normal in several locations. Portions of Alberta and Saskatchewan have also started to dry down a little too much and the need for rain is increasing. A high-pressure ridge will help restrict rainfall for much of the Prairies through the end of next week. Spotty rain and thunderstorms will still occur and briefly lower drying rates. However, aggressive drying will persist for much of crop country. Heat stress will also be a concern in portions of Alberta and Saskatchewan next week with many areas warming near or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Production potentials may further decrease if dryness extends into early August, most notably in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
