Impressive Eastern Australia Rains Improve Moisture Profile

Kansas City, May 28 (World Weather Inc.) – Recent rainfall in eastern Australia has bolstered soil moisture in a favorable manner. There have been a few bouts of rain this month from South Australia through New South Wales, Victoria and more recently in southeastern Queensland. The moisture has brought relief to a dry bias that cut into summer crop yields and has greatly improved the outlook for wheat, barley and canola establishment. This autumn rainfall is of critical importance since the evolution of El Nino this year promises to produce a harsh spring when these crops reproduce. Well-established wheat, barley and canola have a better chance of handling dryness from El Nino in the spring than do crops that are not well established in the autumn. Western Australia rainfall has been more limited recently, but some welcome rain is forthcoming.

Drying in SE Asia To Firm Up Soil in Java, Sumatra Indonesia

Kansas City, May 28 (World Weather Inc.) – Net drying is predicted in portions of Sumatra and Java, Indonesia during the next ten days. El Nino has not yet evolved and the drying in parts of Southeast Asia are not likely directly associated with the development of the warm phase of ENSO; however, there is some concern that the evolving El Nino may exacerbate the drying trend later in June and July bringing on a more notable bout of dryness that is typical of El Nino events.
