Canada Prairies Planting Nears Finish Line Amidst Adversity

Kansas City, June 11 (World Weather Inc.) – The planting season for the Canadian Prairies has been adverse this year. Cool weather and snowstorms at the beginning of the planting season initially slowed or delayed producers from getting into the fields in a timely manner. Periods of rain and storms also slowed fieldwork at times in recent weeks. However, producers were able to plant aggressively between precipitation events in recent weeks. Although planting remains a little behind usual, most producers will be able to finish getting their crops in the ground in the coming days. Erratic rainfall will still occur on a frequent basis through the latter part of next week. However, periods of drier and warmer weather should allow for some fieldwork. Most production areas have ample moisture to support favorable establishment and early-season growth, but there are problem areas with too much moisture and a few that are still a little dry.

India Monsoon Remains Sluggish; Greater Rain Late This Month

Kansas City, June 11 (World Weather Inc.) – India’s monsoon has begun poorly. A part of the reason for poor rainfall has been a Madden-Julian Oscillation event advancing over the Western Hemisphere and Africa which tends to restrict convection in and near India. Rain has still occurred for several production areas, most notably along the southwestern coastline and in the far east where hefty amounts have resulted in some flooding. Lighter moisture in other areas was certainly welcome; though, much greater amounts must evolve to support aggressive fieldwork and new season crop development. Monsoonal rain will remain disrupted by the MJO for the next seven days, though erratic rain will still occur in most locations outside Gujarat and immediate neighboring areas. Planting and general fieldwork will advance swiftly around the rain; however, the need for more significant rain will steadily increase later this month and in July to support better long-term production potentials. Some computer forecast models are offering “some” increase in rainfall during the last ten days of June.
