Russia, Ukraine Winter Wheat Safe From Damaging Cold

Kansas City, January 10 (World Weather Inc.) – Bitter cold air developed over portions of the western and north-central Russia during the New Year holiday weekend and persisted through the first part of this week. Temperatures were well below normal dropping to readings that would damage winter wheat, rye, barley and rapeseed if there was no snow on the ground. However, there has always been sufficient snow around during the coldest days and that should have protected all winter crops from potential damage, including winterkill. Additional waves of snow will continue over the next ten days while the coldest air retreats to the north. Crops should remain sufficiently protected from the lingering cold by the snow; however, flooding may become a concern this spring as the snow melts because of already saturated soil beneath significant snow depths.

Weekly Citrus Weather For Tuesday, January 9, 2024

Kansas City, January 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Florida’s citrus region received timely rain during the past week with more on the way through early next week. Citrus development and minor crop blooming conditions will remain favorable across the region. In Brazil, rainfall varied significantly during the past week in the main citrus locations of Sao Paulo and southwestern Minas Gerais. Citrus conditions remained generally favorable, even in areas that received little or no rain. However, the driest locations would benefit from a boost in precipitation. More widespread rain during the coming week will help bolster or keep soil moisture at favorable levels for aggressive growth. Mexico’s citrus areas were dry or mostly dry during the past week with drier than normal weather persisting through early next week. Harvesting will advance swiftly. The need for timely rain will otherwise increase later this month into February.
