South Africa Will Dry Down Marginally; Crop Prospects Good

Kansas City, January 18 (World Weather Inc.) – Timely rain was again noted for much of South Africa’s main production areas during the past week. Only western Free State received limited to no rain and started to dry down while the moisture profile was rated favorably elsewhere. The country will experience a mix of spotty rain and sunshine during the coming week. Rain amounts will be lower compared to recent weeks in part due to the development of a strong tropical cyclone near Madagascar in the coming days. The moisture profile will either remain near current levels by this time next week or decrease marginally. Crop development conditions will remain favorable despite the potential for some reductions in soil moisture.

Russia, Ukraine To Receive More Snow; Flooding A Concern

Kansas City, January 17 (World Weather Inc.) – A wetter-than-normal environment for the past three months bolstered soil moisture and eventually packed on the snow in Russia, portions of Ukraine, and neighboring areas in the western Commonwealth of Independent States. The moisture was welcome for winter grains and oilseeds early in the autumn and the improved moisture profile should linger into spring to support favorable planting conditions; however, the potential for flooding is on the rise. Portions of Russia and Belarus already have over a foot of snow on the ground on top of excessively wet soil and with more snow on the way through the middle of next week, flood potentials will increase additionally. Late winter or early spring flooding could delay fieldwork and might threaten production.
