Mexico To See Drought Relief From Madden-Julian Oscillation

Kansas City, January 24 (World Weather Inc.) – Drought or abnormally dry conditions have been persisting in portions of Mexico since early last year. Several areas received above normal rainfall in recent months, though not enough rain fell to significantly improve the moisture profile. Winter grain and oilseed conditions vary greatly due to the erratic nature of recent precipitation. Some spotty rain will occur through the end of the weekend as disturbances pass over the United States. Rain potentials will then increase across Mexico in the last days of January and during the first week of February as a Madden-Julian Oscillation event advances across the Pacific Ocean. Rainfall during this time will likely be too light to completely erase the drought; though some relief is expected.

Northwestern Africa, Spain To Dry Down In Coming Weeks

Kansas City, January 25 (World Weather Inc.) – Many areas in Morocco, northwestern Algeria, and eastern Spain continue to struggle with drought or abnormally dry conditions. Spotty rainfall during the past week was welcome where it fell, though not enough to significantly improve winter grain, oilseed, or other crop conditions. The remaining areas in Spain and northwestern Africa still have enough moisture to support generally favorable crop conditions. Below-normal precipitation and warmer-than-normal weather is slated for most locations through the middle of next week as a high-pressure ridge settles over the region. The drier environment will likely persist into the first week of the February as well. Dryness will intensify, increasing concern over future crop development and production potential.
