South Africa Western Crop Ares To Dry Down

Kansas City, February 1 (World Weather Inc.) – Timely rain and ample soil moisture continued to promote a relatively good environment for South Africa’s coarse grains, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, and other crops during the past week. Portions of Free State and North West have trended a little dry in recent weeks, which tends to occur in El Nino environments. Spotty rain during the past few days combined with additional rain in the next few days will maintain good short-term development conditions. However, the need for rain will likely be high for the duration of February in order to ensure favorable production potentials. Eastern South Africa has plenty of moisture to support aggressive growth. Frequent rainfall during the coming week will maintain a good outlook for the crops.

Canadian Prairies Snowpack Low, Drought Remains

Kansas City, February 1 (World Weather Inc.) – The Canadian Prairies entered winter having low moisture reserves. A large section of the Prairies have since trended drier or much drier than normal with some exceptions in Saskatchewan, where precipitation was closer to normal. Temperatures have also climbed well above normal in recent days as a strong high-pressure ridge evolved over western North America, which in turn melted a significant amount of snow. Some of the melted snow will likely be run-off in areas with significant ground frost while portions of the southwestern Prairies may see some of the moisture seep down in the soil. Unless significant changes occur soon spring may arrive with drought prevailing in many areas. The southwestern Prairies are of the greatest concern because of multiple years of dryness has left the ground extremely dry and planting will not occur without some timely rain. There is still time for improved moisture.
