U.S. Plains, Western Midwest Winter Wheat Prospects Good

Kansas City, February 16 (World Weather Inc.) – Hard red winter wheat county in the central and southern U.S. Plains remains in much better shape compared to recent past years. Timely precipitation last autumn and over the winter has improved or erased drought that plagued the region earlier this decade. Prospects for wheat are favorable heading into the spring, not only in the central and southwestern Plains, but in the Midwest, as well. The Plains and western Corn and Soybean Belt will trend dry or mostly dry through the end of next week with limited precipitation expected during the last days of February. Wheat prospects will remain favorable as long as timely rain occurs in March. The eastern Midwest will see a mix of precipitation and sunshine in coming weeks that will keep soil moisture near current levels and maintain good wheat development prospects.

Northern South America Impacted By El Nino

Kansas City, February 16 (World Weather Inc.) – Venezuela and several locations in Colombia have trended drier than normal in recent weeks. Portions of northern South America tend to experience drier than normal conditions during an El Nino environment. The lack of precipitation in recent months caused dryness to expand and intensify in a large section of Venezuela and Colombia. Several grains and oilseeds are planted at this time of year in Colombia and the need for rain is increasing. Coffee and other tree crops are also in a growing need for rain. In the meantime, Ecuador received near to above normal rainfall during the past three months with the moisture profile more favorable than usual in an El Nino year. Ecuador and several areas in Colombia will have several opportunities for rain through the end of February that will be beneficial for crops. Venezuela, however, will remain drier biased through the end of next week and the need for rain will remain high.
