Europe Heatwave Firming Soil; Crops May Be Withering

Kansas City, June 29 (World Weather Inc.) – Excess heat continued across portions Europe over the weekend. Daytime highs surged near or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in several areas of Germany, France, Poland, Italy, and neighboring areas as a high-pressure ridge slowly shifted east to central Europe. Aggressive drying was noted in recent days, especially for France and neighboring areas where the heatwave began last week. Crops may be withering in the driest and warmest areas of France and neighboring locations. Livestock was likely significantly stressed as well. The ridge is slowly shifting into Eastern Europe before breaking down during the next few days, though another weak ridge will extend across mainland Western Europe later this week and weekend. France, Belgium, the Netherlands, southern England, and much of the Iberian Peninsula will be dry or receive limited precipitation this week as a result of the new ridge. The ground will remain dry and crops may continue to be stressed. Other locations in Europe will have opportunities for rain during the next few days as a frontal boundary advances over the region. Rainfall will reduce drying rates, but may not be enough to completely restore soil moisture to favorable levels for aggressive growth.

Parts Of Indonesia Drying Down; Little Relief This Week

Kansas City, June 29 (World Weather Inc.) – A large section of Indonesia and Malaysia outside Peninsular Malaysia and portions of Sumatra were drier than usual during the past month. Aggressive drying was noted, especially for portions of Sulawesi, Java, and the Lesser Sunda Islands. Drier-than-usual weather will also persist for Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, and a few locations in southern Sumatra, southern Kalimantan, and Sulawesi this week. These areas will continue to dry down and may not have enough moisture to support normal rice, sugarcane corn or other crop development. The need for timely rain will increase toward mid-July to reverse the drying trend and support better long-term production potentials. Other areas in Indonesia and Malaysia will see a good mix of rain and sunshine this week that should maintain relatively good crop conditions for the short-term.

U.S. Heat To Benefit Some Crops And Stress Livestock, People

Kansas City, June 26 (World Weather Inc.) – Changing North America weather this weekend will allow for stormy weather to return in Canada as temperatures in the western United States drop well below normal. The chilly conditions and wet bias in those areas will contrast from a mini-heatwave that is expected in the central and interior eastern United States as a high-pressure ridge evolves. Notably high relative humidity and temperatures in the 90s to near and slight above 100 Fahrenheit will result in serious livestock stress while also impacting human outdoor activity. Crops, however, may benefit from the warmer weather – at least for a little while after a lengthy period of frequent rain and mild temperatures. A close watch on the northwestern Corn Belt may be warranted since that area has been drier biased for a while. In the meantime, recent wet weather has the moisture profile mostly favorable in other Midwest, Delta and central Plains crop areas.
