Canadian Prairies In Need Of Drier Weather To Firm Ground

Kansas City, July 1 (World Weather Inc.) – An unusually wet weather pattern continued to impact the Canadian Prairies during the past week. Several crop production areas received abundant rain that promoted localized flooding and standing water. Damaging hail and wind were also noted in a few locations as periods of severe thunderstorms occurred. Most locations have ample moisture to support new growth and would actually benefit from drier and warmer weather. Disturbances will continue to generate scattered showers and thunderstorms on a frequent basis for at least the next seven days. Resulting rainfall will be lower compared to the past week, but will keep the ground saturated in several areas. Long-term production potentials will remain relatively good outside the potential for wet weather diseases and areas in which flooding has already drowned out the crops.

West Texas Rain A Bit Sporadic, Little Change Likely

Kansas City, July 1 (World Weather Inc.) –Several cotton, corn and sorghum production areas in the Southern Plains received timely rain in June that led to good establishment and early-season development. However, West Texas and a few locations in East Texas are dealing with drought and need more significant rain for ideal long-term production potentials. West Texas and a few locations in the Blacklands cotton region will have opportunities for spotty rain and isolated thunderstorms during the coming week. Resulting rainfall will be too light to significantly improve the moisture profile, but it may promote good growth in the short-term. South Texas and the Coastal Bend area will be mostly dry. Cotton potentials may be relatively favorable in the short-term outside the driest areas of West Texas. The need for timely rain will be high heading into the second half of July.
