Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Flooding Rain Worsens

Kansas City, May 2 (World Weather Inc.) – Waves of torrential rain have been occurring across much of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil this week and more is expected. The ground was already saturated before the rain began and the additional precipitation promoted severe flooding in several municipalities. Harvesting of coarse grains, oilseeds, and other crops was already sluggish before the rain due to periods of wet weather earlier in April. The harvest has likely come to a standstill with damage and production losses likely. The extent of the loss is not yet known. Several days of dry weather will be needed before flood waters recede and the ground begins to firm at which time damage assessments begin. However, additional rain through the end of the weekend will exacerbate flooding and continue to delay fieldwork across the state. Additional crop losses are expected and travel will be treacherous. Planting of the winter wheat is on hold and will remain that way until better weather and field conditions evolve.

Eastern Australia Harvest May Be Disrupted, Rain Need In West

Kansas City, May 1 (World Weather Inc.) – Soil moisture is limited in many wheat, barley and canola production areas in Australia and that may induce some delay to initial planting that normally begins in late April and lasts into July. Western and South Australia are driest and must have rain soon before planting is likely to occur. In the meantime, New South Wales and portions of Queensland and eastern South Australia will receive timely rain Friday into the weekend and again during mid- to late-week next week that will improve early-season planting conditions. Western Australia will also receive light rain, though not enough to improve long-term crop prospects. Victoria will trend drier biased through the middle of next week, although it has the best planting moisture today. Rain in eastern Australia may otherwise slow summer grain, oilseed, and cotton harvesting. Quality impacts will be minimal.

Frost Expected in Southern Argentina Thursday, Friday

Kansas City, May 1 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and a couple of very light freezes are possible in southern Argentina Thursday and especially Friday mornings. The impact of this early season cold event should be minimal on most late season crops, although the situation should be closely monitored. The interior southeast part of Buenos Aires should be coolest.
