Mexico Drought Will Persist; Southern Rain Possible June 6-12

Kansas City, May 29 (World Weather Inc.) – Drought intensified across Mexico during the past month. Drier and warmer than normal weather was noted across the country with extreme to exceptional drought noted in portions of east-central, central, northeastern, and northwestern Mexico. Rainfall will remain restricted for at least another week and additional drying is expected. Harvesting of the winter crops will advance with few disruptions. Conditions for summer crops remain less than favorable to poor as the drought persists. Precipitation potentials will slowly increase for southern Mexico during the second week of the outlook. An expansion of the monsoon is likely later in June as well.

Western CIS To Turn Wetter; Southern Russia To Remain Dry

Kansas City, May 29 (World Weather Inc.) – Rainfall was limited during the past week for a large section of the western Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The lack of rain and periods of warm weather promoted aggressive drying across the region. Subsoil moisture is still favorable for established crops, but recently planted spring and summer crops need rain. The driest areas remain from eastern Ukraine into western Kazakhstan where only a limited amount of rain is expected. Russia wheat and rapeseed yields have declined due to frost and freezes earlier this month and the persistent drying in the south since February. Rain is expected in the western CIS through the middle of next week and it should promote more favorable crop growth and development except in a band from eastern Ukraine to western Kazakhstan where dryness will persist threatening additional production issues.

Weak Subtropical High To Keep Many Tropical Storms In Atlantic

Kansas City, May 29 (World Weather Inc.) – Unusually warm tropical Atlantic Ocean water has been given a lot of press in recent months. All forecasting entities have warned of a high frequency of tropical cyclones in the 2024 season. That does not really help much in preparing for the season, although the fear level has certainly been enhanced by all of the publicity and that should lead to some serious preparation for the season. Having a busy tropical cyclone season is easy to predict, but trying to assess the most favored region for land falling storms is a bit more challenging. World Weather, Inc. believes the U.S. Atlantic coast will be the most favored area for land-falling storms this season. However, Mexico, Central America and the lower Texas coast will also be favored. The central Gulf of Mexico Coast may have the lowest potential for land falling storms if the subtropical high pressure system in the Atlantic is weaker than usual all summer, although it only takes one storm to cause a disaster.
