Thailand, Philippines In Need Of Abundant Rainfall

Kansas City, June 7 (World Weather Inc.) – A boost in seasonal rainfall has helped improve the moisture profile for much of mainland Southeast Asia in recent weeks. Pre-monsoonal rainfall in March, April and early May was well below normal and even though the region rain has been closer to normal there are lingering areas of low soil moisture. Some computer forecast model runs have recently suggested that parts of Interior southern Thailand, Cambodia and portions of Vietnam will be drier biased through the next two weeks after trending that way in this latest week. Many corn, rice, and sugarcane areas will either remain too dry or will become too dry to support ideal conditions and the need for abundant rain will remain high. In the meantime, some rain fell in the Philippines during the past week, though significant moisture deficits are ongoing in a large section of the country and timely rain through the end of next week will slowly improve the situation. Much more rain will be needed to completely fix the moisture deficits in the Philippines.

South Africa Rain To Support Better Winter Crop Establishment

Kansas City, June 6 (World Weather Inc.) – An unusually great rain event occurred in the heart of wheat, barley and canola producing areas of South Africa during the past week bolstered soil moisture in time to support better crop establishment. Rainfall was greatest in Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and portions of Northern Cape as well as western Free State which will be beneficial for all winter crops in coming weeks. Lighter rain fell in summer crop areas causing some brief harvest delays, but no harm came to any remaining crop. Drier weather has already returned to South Africa and it will prevail through the coming week to ten days which will support additional fieldwork.

Europe Flooding May Expand Out Of The Alps

Kansas City, June 6 (World Weather Inc.) – Excessive rainfall and flooding have occurred in southern Germany, eastern Switzerland, northern Italy, Austria and parts of Slovenia during the past week. Most of the impacted region was mountainous and not agricultural land, but additional rain expected in this coming week from northern Spain and southern France through southern Germany and northern Italy to Poland, Belarus and western Ukraine may eventually lead to expanding flood conditions into some agricultural land. Flooding will worsen in the Alps where personal property damage has already occurred and where many rivers and streams are already over their banks. Some damage to agriculture is expected in this coming week, but losses should be light. Less rain is expected to the north and south of this expected band of excessive moisture.
