Gatun Lake Levels Improve; Panama Canal Surcharges Drop

Kansas City, June 24 (World Weather Inc.) – Panama Canal traffic has been slowly increasing in recent weeks as Gatun Lake levels rise in response to the arrival of the rainy season. Extremely low lake levels in the past year induced very high surcharges for cargo ships passing through the canal and there were draught restrictions as well. The draught restrictions remain in place, but a steady increase in rainfall recently has the lake water levels rising which has already increased the number of cargo ships allowed to move through the canal. Lake levels will continue to improve through August, although it will be a while before lake levels rise enough to reduce some of the limitations on shipping.

Argentina Harvest, Winter Crop Planting To Advance Swiftly

Kansas City, June 24 (World Weather Inc.) – Harvesting of Argentina’s summer crops is ongoing across the main production areas. Weather conditions have been good and there has been no threat to unharvested grain, cotton or oilseeds. Planting of winter wheat and barley is also ongoing across the country. Dry or mostly dry weather for the next week to ten days will continue to support favorable harvesting and winter crop planting. Soil moisture will otherwise decrease slowly and the need for timely rain will increase later in the winter.
