Former Soviet Union Summer Crops In Relatively Good Shape

Kansas City, July 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Russia’s ‘Southern Region’ and several areas in Ukraine dried down in recent weeks due to a lack of rain and periods of warm weather. The environment has been beneficial for aggressive winter grain and oilseed maturation and harvesting. However, summer grains and oilseeds are in growing need of rain to support better growth. Ukraine and Russia’s ‘Southern Region’ will have a few opportunities for rain during the coming week that may improve short-term conditions for the summer crops. Winter grain and oilseed harvesting should advance around the rain as well. Many fields will not receive enough rain to significantly improve the moisture profile and more precipitation will be needed later this month. Other production areas in the former Soviet Union will see a good mix of rain and sunshine during the coming week. Development conditions will remain favorable for the summer grains, oilseeds, and other crops produced this time of year.

Canadian Prairies Will Finally Start To Dry Down

Kansas City, July 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Wet weather and frequent thunderstorms were again noted across the Canadian Prairies during the past week. Minor damage or stress was suspected in areas that experience damaging winds, hail, flooding, and standing water. Overall, new production losses were suspected of being minimal, though the need for drier weather is high in a large section of crop country. Some of the worst flooded areas have lost acreage. Rain potentials will be lower for at least the next seven days for much of the Prairies as a high-pressure ridge slowly builds over North America. The Prairies will not be completely dry and disturbances will still promote erratic rain and thunderstorms during the next several days. With the ridge sending warmer air into much of crop country, drying rates will gradually increase outside the northwest corner of crop country. Overall conditions will improve due to the lack of abundant rain and warmer than usual temperatures.

Typhoon Bavi To Steadily Weaken Upon Approach to China

Kansas City, July 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Typhoon Bavi was trekking through the Philippine Sea today while experiencing some dry air intrusion. The storm was expected to steadily weaken the remainder of today and Friday as it steams toward southeastern China. Landfall is expected Saturday, but the storm will already be impacting Taiwan Friday with bands of rain and increasing wind speeds. The storm will reach Zhejiang, China around 1500 UTC Saturday, July 11 as a Category One hurricane equivalent storm. Flooding is the greatest risk from this system for rice in particular, but some other grain, oilseed, citrus and sugarcane areas will be impacted to some degree as well.
