Western Europe Will Not See Much Relief From Dryness

Kansas City, July 13 (World Weather Inc.) – Significant moisture shortages persist in France, the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and immediate neighboring areas. Adverse conditions so far this growing season continue to promote uneven or poor development, even in some of the irrigated areas. Southeastern Europe also dried down during the past week and a good shot of rain is needed to improve crop development conditions. Much of Western Europe will remain drier than usual this week despite some erratic rainfall in France and Germany. Resulting rainfall will not be enough to restore soil moisture to optimum levels and crop conditions will remain less than favorable to poor for several locations. Drier-than-usual weather will prevail for southeastern Europe as well, which could impact development conditions in the driest areas. The remaining locations in Eastern Europe will see a good mix of rain and sunshine this week supporting favorable crop development.

Southern Indonesia Dryness Intensifying

Kansas City, July 13 (World Weather Inc.) – A large section of Indonesia outside northern and central Sumatra and pockets in northern Kalimantan were drier or even much drier than usual during the past month. The ground gradually firmed and many locations are too dry to support favorable rice, sugarcane, corn, and other short-rooted crop development. Precipitation will remain limited for Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, southern Sumatra, portions of Sulawesi and southern Kalimantan for at least another week and additional drying is expected. Moisture stress may impact production potentials if precipitation remains limited through the end of the month. Other areas in Indonesia will see a good mix of rain and sunshine. Short-term development conditions will remain relatively favorable outside the driest areas in Sulawesi.

Extreme Heat In North U.S. Plains; Drought Expansion Likely

Kansas City, July 12 (World Weather Inc.) – Excessive heat developed in the northern Plains during the weekend as expected with extreme highs to 115 degrees Fahrenheit Sunday afternoon. Temperatures may not be quite so extreme this week, but they will still be in the 90s to well over 100 while little to no rain falls resulting in an expansion of drought from South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana northward a part of both North Dakota and Minnesota. Rain is possible in the second week of the forecast, but it is unclear how significant that will be. Partial relief will come with the rain (favoring the northeast part of the region), but the situation warrants a very close watch.

U.S. North Plains Heat, Dryness Pose A Threat to Agriculture

Kansas City, July 10 (World Weather Inc.) – A strong high-pressure ridge is slated to build over central North America this weekend and will prevail through at least the middle of next week. As a result of the ridge, a heat dome will build over the U.S. northern Plains and several neighboring locations during this time. Temperatures will soar well above normal with many areas in Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, The Snake River Valley in Idaho and Oregon, and southern fringes of the Canadian Prairies warming near or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit for several days. A few extreme highs will reach up near 113. Heat stress will impact all crops and livestock in this region and concern is rising because of limited rainfall for at least ten days even though the hottest temperatures will abate sooner. Wyoming and several areas in Montana and the Dakotas are already abnormally dry or in varying stages of drought and the hot daytime temperatures will further exacerbate the situation.
