Western Africa Cocoa, Coffee Prospects Relatively Favorable

Kansas City, July 15 (World Weather Inc.) – Ghana, Ivory Coast, and much of Togo, Benin, and southwestern Nigeria all received near to above normal rainfall during the past month. Several areas in Ivory Coast received a little too much rain and would welcome a period of drier weather. Production potentials for this season’s cocoa, coffee, and row crops is relatively favorable. Cameroon and southeastern Nigeria were otherwise drier than the past month and a boost in rain would be welcome. Cameroon, Nigeria, and northern sections of Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Benin will see a good mix of seasonal rainfall and dry weather through the middle of next week. The rain will be most welcome in Cameroon and southeastern Nigeria, which should improve development conditions. Other production areas closer to the western Africa coastline will have a few opportunities for spotty rain, though net drying will occur in most locations. Cocoa, coffee, sugarcane, cotton rice and other crop prospects will remain favorable despite the lack of rain.

India Monsoon Again Disrupted; Parts Of South, West Too Dry

Kansas City, July 15 (World Weather Inc.) – Challenges continue to mount for India this season due to an uneven distribution of monsoonal rain. Many areas in southern and western India were drier than usual during the past month and continue to face significant moisture shortages. Crops may be developing unevenly or poorly and there is a pressing need for rain. In the meantime, far western Maharashtra suffered from torrential rain that promoted severe flooding and landslides earlier this month. Significant crop and structural damage were noted, though the extent of the losses was not yet known. Other production areas in India saw a mix of rain and sunshine during the past week. Crop conditions are relatively good despite some locations also trending a little drier than usual in the east. A Madden-Julian Oscillation event over the western Pacific Ocean will again disrupt monsoonal precipitation during the next several days with rainfall favoring the eastern production areas. A monsoonal disturbance could bring rain to portions of northern and central India at the beginning of next week while precipitation remains limited in the west and south. Development conditions will remain highly variable due to another week of uneven rainfall.
