Southern Sumatra, Java Still Too Dry; Not Much Relief Expected

Kansas City, August 21 (World Weather Inc.) – Several areas in Indonesia dried down steadily during the past month. The southern half of Sumatra experienced much drier than normal conditions while several areas in Java and Borneo were also drier than normal. Other locations in Indonesia and Malaysia received enough rain to keep soil moisture rated adequately in recent weeks. Dryness has not lasted long enough to impact most tree crops, but short rooted crops have likely experienced a little moisture stress and need moisture soon to protect production. Timely rain will be needed soon to support the planting of new season crops. Continued dryness may limit early-season planting and impact long-term production potentials. Drier biased conditions will persist for Java and southern Sumatra through the middle of next week and additional drying is expected. Other locations in Indonesia and much of Malaysia will have several opportunities for rain.

India Monsoon Depression This Weekend May Induce Flooding

Kansas City, August 20 (World Weather Inc.) – Although rain varied significantly across the country during the past week, the main production areas in India either received enough rain or had enough moisture to support relatively good conditions for the crops. Flooding was possible in the wettest locations of Bangladesh and the Eastern States in recent days. Crop and structural damage was likely minimal and no major production impacts were suspected. Monsoonal rain will persist on a frequent basis for much of India during the coming week. A monsoonal disturbance will enhance rainfall for portions of eastern, central, and western India over the weekend and early next week, which could promote localized flooding. Minor damage will be possible in areas that experience flooding. The environment will otherwise remain favorable for aggressive growth.

Weekly Citrus Weather For August 20, 2024

Kansas City, August 20 (World Weather Inc.) – Florida’s citrus areas again received timely rain during the past week. With more rain on the way during the coming week, rainfall will help keep soil moisture and water storage at favorable levels. Citrus development conditions will remain good. In Mexico, monsoonal rain continued on a frequent basis for the east-central and western production areas. Much of citrus country will have opportunities for rain during the coming week, even the driest areas in the northeast. However, yield potentials will remain lower than usual due to adverse conditions earlier this growing season. A frontal boundary will bring some rain to Sao Paulo and southwestern Minas Gerais, Brazil late Friday and this weekend. No major delays are expected and dry weather will support better harvest conditions most other days during the coming week.
