Disappointing Drought Relief In U.S. Plains Wheat Areas

Kansas City, October 20 (World Weather Inc.) – Rain developed as expected in the central and southwestern U.S. Plains during the weekend. The resulting rainfall was, by far, greatest in southeastern Colorado and especially eastern New Mexico, but very little relief from drought occurred in the key wheat production areas of Kansas, Oklahoma or the Texas Panhandle, although showers will develop additionally into these areas Monday.

Portions Of CIS Wheat Region Get Relief From Drought

Kansas City, October 20 (World Weather Inc.) – Not all of the rainfall data is available from Russia’s Southern Region and neighboring areas, but preliminary data has suggested partial relief from drought occurred Thursday night through Sunday morning. The area most relieved from persistent dryness was in western Kazakhstan and from the Russian southern Ural Mountains region into a part of the middle and lower Volga River Basin. Eastern Ukraine and crop areas into the western portion of Russia’s Southern Region may have come up a little short on moisture. All of the precipitation was welcome, though more is needed.

Tropical Storm Nadine Remnants To Generate New Pacific Storm

Kansas City, October 20 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Storm Nadine moved across Belize Saturday and has since dissipated to a remnant low pressure center over Chiapas, Mexico. The remnants of the storm will advance over the tropical southeastern Pacific Ocean Monday when it will regenerate into a new tropical cyclone and move west northwesterly out to sea. The new storm will not have much impact on cropland or property. Rainfall during the weekend was locally heavy in parts of southeastern Mexico from southern Veracruz to the Yucatan Peninsula and northern Guatemala.

Hurricane Oscar Impacting Eastern Cuba Coffee Areas

Kansas City, October 20 (World Weather Inc.) – Hurricane Oscar formed suddenly early in the weekend over open water in the Atlantic Ocean and was interacting with eastern Cuba today. The hurricane will be downgraded to tropical storm status later this evening as it moves briefly over land, but a turn to the north and then to the northeast will likely take the system to the southeastern Bahamas and then out to sea. The storm poses no threat to North America, but heavy rain and flooding is likely in eastern Cuba and southeastern parts of the Bahamas through Tuesday. Oscar will continue moving northeast during the middle and latter part of this week with the system slowly losing its tropical characteristics.

China Wheat Gets Well-Timed Rain; Harvest Advances Well

Kansas City, October 18 (World Weather Inc.) – A disturbance brought much-needed relief to China’s North China Plain and central Yellow River Basin Thursday. The region had been drying down, which was beneficial for aggressive maturation and harvesting of the summer grains, oilseeds, cotton, and other crops produced in these areas. Winter wheat planting was also advancing with few disruptions. However, the main production areas had been drying down a little too much and the need for rain was steadily rising for more aggressive establishment. This rain should have reversed that trend greatly improving planting, emergence and establishment conditions for the next couple of weeks. Some spotty rain will persist during the next few days perpetuating the improved conditions. Planting of the winter rapeseed and wheat has advanced well in the Yangtze River Basin where some rain has also fallen and more is expected.
