Russia’s Winter Wheat May Establish Unevenly Before Winter

Kansas City, October 30 (World Weather Inc.) – Winter grain and oilseed prospects are variable across the western Commonwealth of Independent States. The main production areas for Russia and neighboring locations in eastern Ukraine and western Kazakhstan still have a shortage of moisture despite spotty rainfall in recent weeks. These areas will again have opportunities for more rain through the middle of next week that will marginally bolster soil moisture. However, the environment will be far from ideal and winter is approaching. Soil temperatures are decreasing rapidly and will further decrease in the coming weeks. Many crops may establish unevenly or poorly before going dormant, which could increase the threat for winterkill.

Taiwan Braces For Devastation From Typhoon Kong-Rey

Kansas City, October 30 (World Weather Inc.) – Typhoon Kong-Rey reached super typhoon intensity for a little while Tuesday and overnight while tracking over the western Pacific Ocean. The storm has recently begun to weaken, although it remains a very intense Category Four hurricane equivalent storm. Outer rain bands from the disturbance have already begun to lash at Taiwan and tropical storm force wind has also begun along with the start of a significant storm surge. Torrential rain and significantly strong wind speeds will promote extensive damage across Taiwan tonight and Thursday. Unharvested rice, sugarcane and other crops may be destroyed in areas near to the coast where landfall is likely. Kong-Rey will also promote torrential rain and very serious flooding in Taiwan before bringing less intensive wind and rain to portions of Fujian, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, China Thursday and Friday. The disturbance will then likely track across southern Japan Friday and Saturday with localized flooding a concern.
