Serious Flooding Possible Oklahoma To Missouri

Kansas City, November 1 (World Weather Inc.) – Drought will be dramatically eased and in some cases busted by heavy rain that is expected from parts of Oklahoma through central Missouri to parts of northwestern Illinois. The forecast has not changed much today; however, the potential threat for serious flooding is rising even though the ground is still relatively dry. A close watch on this same area may be needed in the second week of the outlook as additional moisture possibly flows into the region.

Rain From Tropical Storm Kong-Rey Reaches Japan

Kansas City, November 1 (World Weather Inc.) – Rain from tropical storm Kong-Rey has been impacting western Japan today and much of the region from Honshu to Kyushu will receive rain from the storm into Sunday morning. The storm has lost most of its threatening properties, although it will still promote some windy conditions and moderate rain as it moves through Kyushu and Shikoku, Japan tonight and Saturday. The storm will then skirt the southeast coast of Honshu, Japan before moving out to sea away from eastern Asia. The storm’s potential damage will be limited to local flooding and some minor wind damage unlike the more devastating impact the storm had on Taiwan earlier this week.

Vietnam Flooding To Resume Next Week

Kansas City, November 1 (World Weather Inc.) – Central Vietnam often receives excessive rainfall during the fourth calendar quarter of each year and this year is turning out to be no different. Excessive rain this past weekend resulted from Tropical Storm Trami with amounts to 21.53 inches occurring at Hue. Hue went on to report 35.47 inches of total rain for the month of October and the heavy rain is not over. A short term break is underway now, but another tropical disturbance next week and a developing northeast monsoon flow of air will return heavy rain to all of central Vietnam. The return of excessive rain is likely to induce new bouts of flooding – some of which may be very serious in urban areas like Hue, Da Nang, Quang Tri and Vinh.

South Africa’s Northwest Summer Crop Areas Need Rain

Kansas City, October 31 (World Weather Inc.) – Planting is set to expand across South Africa in coming weeks. Some rain was noted in portions of eastern South Africa during the past few weeks and early-season planting prospects are good for some. However, more widespread and significant rain is needed to completely fix the moisture deficits across the main summer crop areas. Eastern South Africa will again have opportunities for erratic rainfall during the coming week that will chip away at some of the dryness. However, more rain will be needed for ideal establishment and early-season development. Western portions of the nation’s summer crop region remains dry and needs significant rain before planting becomes aggressive in unirrigated fields. Wheat harvest conditions will be good in the dry areas, but some delay is possible in a few western Cape production areas due to rain.

Southern Indonesia Rain To Return Soon

Kansas City, October 31 (World Weather Inc.) – Rainfall in Java, southern Sumatra and other areas in southern Indonesia was limited at times in recent months. Dryness became more pronounced in the past few weeks as seasonal rains were slow to develop. Rainfall in the past couple of weeks was further reduced by the suppressed convective phase of Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) in which rainfall is inhibited by a broad-based area of high pressure aloft. The lack of abundant rain was welcome for aggressive planting and general fieldwork. However, many areas were already a little too dry prior to this period and likely remained that way resulting in delays to planting and general crop development. The suppressed phase of MJO will shift far enough to the east in the Pacific Ocean over the next ten days to two weeks to allow frequent rainfall to return in southern Indonesia. Portions of Malaysia and northern Indonesia will also be impacted by increasing rainfall favoring improved planting and establishment conditions for some crops and accelerated crop development in other areas.
