Additional Severe Flooding In Portions Of Malaysia, Indonesia

Kansas City, December 5 (World Weather Inc.) – Torrents of persistent rain induced horrific flooding and landslides in portions of Malaysia and Indonesia the past two weeks and more was expected through mid-December. Damage to rice, sugarcane and corn was suspected, although the extent of the impact was still under investigation. Other crops have been impacted as well and there is concern for portions of the region as more heavy rain events occur through mid-month. Those areas not suffering from serious flooding have experienced a notable increase in soil moisture recently with a large part of the region excessively wet and vulnerable to flooding.

Northern India In Need Of Rain For Rabi Crops

Kansas City, December 4 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Cyclone Fengal produced significant rainfall in portions of southern India during the past week. Localized flooding was noted and some damage to infrastructure was suspected in portions of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Some open boll cotton may have been negatively impacted by the heavy rain event; otherwise the impact may have been low on other Kharif crops which have been largely harvested. A very small part of winter crops produced in the region could have been damaged and assessments of the impact are still ongoing. Southern India will have additional opportunities for rain in the coming week that may disrupt fieldwork and damage assessments. In the meantime, northern India is in need of rain for wheat and other rabi crops. A weak weather disturbance will promote some rain Sunday and Monday that may briefly improve short-term crop conditions; however, much more rain will be needed.
