Tropical Cyclone Chido Will Only Clip Northern Madagascar

Kansas City, December 12 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Cyclone Chido was located northeast of Madagascar this morning. The disturbance will clip the northern tip of the country Friday before tracking toward Mozambique Saturday. Some rain and elevated winds are expected in portions of northern Madagascar due to Chido, though no damaging conditions are expected. Chido will then track into northern Mozambique Sunday before gradually dissipating early next week. Significant rain and strong winds are slated for portions of northern Mozambique, which produces some grains and oilseeds at this time of year. Minor damage will be possible and recently planted crops may need to be reseeded if flooding is severe enough. No damage is expected to Madagascar’s vanilla crop.

SE Australia Harvest To Advance Under Better Conditions

Kansas City, December 11 (World Weather Inc.) – Eastern Australia saw a mix of erratic rain and sunshine during the past week that may have again slowed the winter grain and oilseed harvest. Periods of rain in recent weeks slowed the harvest in southeastern Australia and the need for drier weather was increasing. Some grain and oilseed quality decline may have occurred because of frequent rain, although most of the unharvested crop should not have been seriously impacted. Much of Australia will trend drier than normal through the middle of next week; though, some spotty rain is expected in Western Australia. The environment will improve or remain favorable for aggressive harvesting and fieldwork. Summer crops in eastern Australia are in very good shape following recent rain.

Northwest Africa In Dire Need Of Rain; Drier Weather To Persist

Kansas City, December 11 (World Weather Inc.) – A large portion of northwestern Africa’s winter grain and oilseed areas are still in need of abundant rainfall. Although timely rain was noted in September and October, rainfall was too light to completely fix the ongoing drought. Precipitation was also limited in November that helped counteract any improvements that occurred earlier in the autumn. Portions of northern Algeria and Tunisia again received much-needed rain during the past week while Morocco was mostly dry. Even with the periods of rain in recent months, the environment remains less than favorable for much of the winter wheat, barley, and rapeseed. Drier biased conditions are slated for northwestern Africa for at least the next week to ten days. Crop conditions will deteriorate or remain poor and concern for another season of below normal production will persist.
