SE U.S. Cold Should Spare Sugarcane, Citrus From Serious Harm

Kansas City, January 8 (World Weather Inc.) – A series of cold air masses continue to pass through the southeastern one third of the United States keeping the region near and south of the Ohio River Valley colder than usual. A winter storm passing through the Delta to the middle and southern Atlantic Coast States Thursday into Saturday will reinforce this trend and maintain some very cold weather in the Gulf of Mexico Coast States. Frost and a few light freezes will occur in Louisiana sugarcane and some northern Florida citrus areas, but the intensity of the cold should stop short of causing a serious threat to 2025 production. Other crops in northern Florida and the southeastern states will be impacted by the cold, although recovery is expected without much concern over future development.

Morocco Still Struggling; Rain Slated For Tunisia, Algeria

Kansas City, January 7 (World Weather Inc.) – Drought is ongoing in much of Morocco as drier biased conditions persisted in recent weeks. The environment has been harsh for the winter grains and oilseeds and production is expected to be well below normal fore the upcoming season. The country will remain dry or mostly dry in the coming week and prospects will remain unchanged. Algeria and Tunisia have also been drier-biased this season, although not nearly as seriously dry as Morocco. Rain is expected in north-central and northeastern Algeria and parts of Tunisia during the coming week that will bring some welcome relief. Additional rain would still be welcome later this month to further improve production potentials.

Weekly Citrus Weather For January 7, 2025

Kansas City, January 7 (World Weather Inc.) – Florida’s citrus areas were mostly dry during the past week and will receive limited rainfall in the coming days. Nighttime temperatures dropped to the 30s Fahrenheit at times in the northern citrus counties and will again cool to the 30s on a frequent basis during the coming week. No damaging conditions are expected. Brazil’s citrus areas saw a good mix of rain and sunshine during the past week with more on the way during the coming week. Development conditions will remain generally favorable, though yields are still expected to trend lower than usual this season mostly due to greening disease. Mexico will be unusually wet during the coming week. Early-season flowering may occur in areas that receive the greatest amount of rain.
