Winter Storm Brings Local Relief To SW U.S. Plains Dryness

Kansas City, January 10 (World Weather Inc.) – Drought has been prevailing in the U.S. desert southwest for an extended period of time. Drought has not been declared in the southwestern Plains, but some areas have been quite dry since big November rains impacted the region. A winter storm that began in the southwestern U.S. Plains Thursday brought some moisture to a part of the drier areas in the southwestern Plains, but only local relief resulted and there is still need for more moisture.

Eastern South Africa To Receive More Rain; Flooding Possible

Kansas City, January 9 (World Weather Inc.) – The main summer crop production areas of South Africa received rain on a frequent basis during the past week. The rain helped bolster soil moisture to adequate or excessive levels and may have promoted localized flooding. Coarse grain, oilseed, cotton, and other crop development conditions either improve or remained favorable outside areas impacted by excessive moisture. Additional rain is slated for eastern South Africa during the coming week. The rain will keep the ground saturated and may again promote localized flooding. Crop damage should be minimal and the environment will remain generally good for new growth. Unirrigated portions of western Free State, eastern Northern Cape and North West will otherwise dry down leading to an increasing need for timely rain later this month and early February.

Russia, Ukraine Winter Crop Prospects Improving

Kansas City, January 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Winter grains and oilseeds established unevenly or poorly from eastern Ukraine through Russia’s Southern Region to western Kazakhstan due to chronic dryness last autumn. Recent precipitation has brought a little more moisture to the dry region and with additional precipitation falling erratically in the coming week the potential is rising for possible improvement to crop establishment early in the spring. Most of the coming week’s precipitation will stay west of Kazakhstan. So far this season, temperatures have been warmer than usual keeping the risk of winterkill very low, despite poor crop establishment.

Southern Luzon Island Flood Potentials Remain High

Kansas City, January 8 (World Weather Inc.) – Excessive rainfall was noted in parts of southern Luzon Island, Samar Island, and neighboring locations in the Philippines in recent days. Flooding and landslides resulted which may have damaged some infrastructure, rice, corn, sugarcane and a host of other crops. Waves of rain will persist through the middle of next week for southern Luzon and portions of the Visayan Islands. Additional flooding is likely and may promote further crop and infrastructural damage. Other areas in the Philippines will receive enough rain to keep soil moisture at adequate or excessive levels, though flooding should be minimal.

Southern China Dryness To Spread, Intensify

Kansas City, January 8 (World Weather Inc.) – Southern and east-central China was mostly dry in the most recent seven-day period. Temperatures were also warmer than normal at times enhancing drying rates for these areas. Drought or abnormally dry conditions are persisting and there is no precipitation of significance expected in the next ten days to two weeks. Winter rapeseed development conditions may be impacted once seasonal warming brings crops out of dormancy in the driest areas of the Yangtze River Basin in February and March which is normal. Winter wheat prospects remain favorable for the North China Plain and neighboring locations, though timely precipitation would also be welcome. The only other area of concern is in the southern coastal provinces where early rice planting begins in March and soil moisture must be improved by then to support planting.
