Southeastern Europe Drying Down To the Detriment Of Crops

Kansas City, August 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Much like Western Europe, the Balkans region and neighboring areas of the Black Sea region have been drying down in recent weeks, although the situation is not nearly as extreme as that in France, the U.K. or western Germany. Romania and Ukraine still received rain earlier this month that supported relatively good development outside the driest pockets. Other locations in the Balkans dried down significantly. With at least a week of additional drier-and warmer-than-normal weather, aggressive drying will continue across Southeast Europe. The environment may deteriorate for coarse grains, oilseeds, and other crops that are still in the development stages. Precipitation may remain limited during the last week of August as well and could further impact late-season growth.

Western Europe Will Remain Too Dry Despite Rain Chances

Kansas City, August 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Drought conditions have not changed much in western Europe, despite a few showers and thunderstorms during the past week. Additional showers and storms are predicted for a part of the dry region, but drought is unlikely to dissipate and some areas are unlikely to get much usable precipitation. The best news for some producers is that the excessive heat that returned during the weekend will slowly abate this week. Some of the rain expected this week will occur too late in the season to improve late-season growth and overall production potentials. Maturation and early-season harvesting may even be disrupted in the pockets that receive the greatest amount of rain.

Tropical Storm Lala Brings Torrential Rain to Hawaii

Kansas City, August 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Excessive rain up to 37.00 inches (more than 3 feet) occurred in the last 72 hours along the eastern face of the big island of Hawaii, with up to 16.00 inches occurring along the remainder of the Hawaiian Islands. Significant flash flooding and landslides, alongside property and infrastructure damage occurred throughout the island chain, although the big island of Hawaii may have been most impacted. Agricultural damage may have occurred given the excessive rain, landslides, and flooding, though crop assessments are still pending. Damage to personal property and infrastructure may have been more serious than to agriculture.

U.S. Past Week Rain Raises Concern For Some, Benefits Others

Kansas City, August 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Rain over the past week in key U.S. crop areas was highly varied. Too much moisture fell in the heart of the Midwest while some dryness easing rain fell in the northern Plains and a part of Canada’s Prairies. The Delta and southern Plains, however, were left dry with excessive heat stressing livestock and crops. The outlook this week maintains heat dryness in the southern Plains and a part of the Delta while scattered showers persist in the Midwest. Drying will resume in the northern Plains and Canada’s southern Prairies while the southeastern states and portions of the Midwest see more rain.
