U.S. Central, Southern Plains And Delta To Dry Down

Kansas City, July 18 (World Weather Inc.) – Soil moisture and crop conditions through a large portion of the United States east of the high Plains region is rated favorably today. A high pressure ridge and associated “heat dome” is expected to evolve this weekend and next week that will suppress rainfall and notably raise temperatures across the region; however, subsoil moisture will remain favorably rated in many Midwestern locations. That will not be the case for portions of the central or southern Great Plains, Delta or immediate neighboring areas where oppressive heat and humidity will stress livestock and dry out the soil leading to increases in crop moisture stress. Weather conditions in early August will be extremely important and the European model run at mid-day today downplayed rainfall for July 29-August 2.

Tropical Storm Wipha To Bring Flooding To South China

Kansas City, July 18 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Storm Wipha formed near the north coast of Luzon Island, Philippines today and was expected to strengthen while moving toward Guangdong China this weekend. The storm will then turn to the west and bring flooding rain to western Guangdong, southern Guangxi and portions of both northern Hainan and northern Vietnam. Landfall in northern Vietnam is expected early next week. In the meantime, flooding rain is expected today and Saturday in the northwest half of Luzon Island.
Indonesia, Malaysia To Dry Down Significantly

Kansas City, July 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Several locations in Malaysia, northern Sumatra, and a few locations in Kalimantan were drier than usual during the past month. These areas still had enough moisture and received enough rain to maintain a good environment for many crops. The remaining locations in Indonesia received near to above normal rainfall and crop prospects remain favorable. Drier-than-normal weather is slated for a large section of Malaysia and Indonesia for at least the next seven days. A robust Madden-Julian Oscillation event evolved in recent days over Southeast Asia and will make its way into the western Pacific Ocean. This phase in the MJO limits precipitation for Indonesia and Malaysia. The ground will gradually firm and may impact development rates.
Southern China Will Be Impacted By Tropical Disturbances

Kansas City, July 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Dryness has returned to a part of the North China Plain and lower Yellow River Basin during the past two weeks and it may prevail through the weekend and perhaps longer before there is good opportunity for relief. In the meantime, far southern China has experienced frequent bouts of rain this season and the ground is saturated or nearly saturated. A developing tropical cyclone near Luzon Island, Philippines today is expected to intensify and move toward Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan, China this weekend while a second storm possibly evolves east of Taiwan next week before possibly impacting southeastern China a week or more from now. Other areas in China will see a favorable mix of rain and sunshine.
U.S. Oppressive Heat, Humidity To Raise Human, Livestock Risk

Kansas City, July 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Weather in the central and eastern United States this spring and summer was mostly very pleasant. Very few bouts of excessive heat, persistent dryness or other adversity occurred and crop development has been advancing quite favorably. Changes are forthcoming that will bring a period of hotter temperatures and high relative humidity that will probably stress animals and outdoor human activity more than it will threaten crops. Nonetheless human and animal health concerns will be rising this weekend and continue through all of next week and into a part of the following weekend as a result of building high pressure aloft. A decrease in rain frequency will occur for a few days while temperatures are warmest, but as the ridge shifts to the east in late July and early August some relief is expected.
