Derecho Reaches Minnesota After Moving Across North Dakota

Kansas City, August 8 (World Weather Inc.) – A large cluster of thunderstorms that evolved in Montana Thursday afternoon advanced across much of North Dakota and far southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada to southern Manitoba and western Minnesota overnight. The storms produced damaging wind, hail and heavy rainfall. The system will likely be classified as a Derecho, although an assessment of the wind damage will need to be made before the event is officially classified as a Derecho. This is the second Derecho of the season with the first event reported last month in South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and parts of Iowa.

Eastern Australia Will Receive Much-Needed Rain

Kansas City, August 7 (World Weather Inc.) – Winter wheat, barley, and canola potentials are generally favorable for Western Australia, South Australia, and Victoria. Timely rain in recent weeks helped support good establishment and early-season development. New South Wales and Queensland also received some rain in July, though not enough to fix the moisture deficits. Several fields are too dry for ideal long-term production potentials and more rain is needed; however, improved soil moisture sets the stage for improved establishment prior to aggressive spring development. A disturbance will bring much-needed rain to portions of eastern Australia today and Friday that will offer short-term relief from dryness in Queensland. The region will need more rain to further improve long-term crop conditions. Western Australia, South Australia, and Victoria will see periods of spotty rain as well that will maintain relatively good crop conditions.
