U.S. Midwest Needs Warmer, Drier Weather For A While

Kansas City, August 19 (World Weather Inc.) – Corn and soybean prospects remain relatively favorable across the U.S. Midwest as rain fell across the region during the past week. Flooding was noted in many areas at one time or another from eastern Nebraska through parts of Iowa to Illinois, Indiana and Ohio that may have damaged some of the crop and soybeans. The week’s derecho also caused some significant wind damage for corn in some areas. The crops now need warmer and at least some temporary drier weather to support better corn filling and maturation conditions and soybean pod filling. Alternating periods of rain and sunshine are slated for much of the Midwest through the middle of next week. The rain will be light enough to allow some runoff to continue taking the region’s excess moisture away while maintaining enough soil moisture to support long term crop development. However, temperatures will be milder than usual resulting in both slower evaporation rates and slower crop development. Warming will be needed.

Australia Winter Crop Prospects Relatively Favorable

Kansas City, August 19 (World Weather Inc.) – Despite some periodic dryness in Western Australia and Queensland, production potentials for the winter wheat, barley, and canola is relatively favorable for Australia this season. Yields are expected to be lower than last season in part due to a reduction in planted acreage stemming from El Nino. However, there has been enough rain to support good development conditions so far this year. Eastern Australia will see a good mix of rain and sunshine through the middle of next week while precipitation is limited for Western Australia and South Australia. Production potentials will remain favorable as long as timely rain occurs later in the spring for the driest areas in Western Australia and Queensland.
