South Africa In Need Of More Rain As Planting Begins

Kansas City, October 23 (World Weather Inc.) – Early-season planting of South Africa’s coarse grain, oilseeds, and cotton is likely underway. Eastern and central South Africa saw a mix of rain and sunshine during the past week that was beneficial for some early-planted crops and perhaps for a little localized planting; however, soil moisture is too low to support ideal establishment and early-season growth with many areas too dry for germination and seeding. The main production areas will only have a few opportunities for erratic rainfall during the coming week. The moisture profile will remain low and the need for rain will steadily increase until relief occurs. In the meantime, winter wheat harvesting will advance swiftly.

Russia, Ukraine Winter Crop Establishment Improving

Kansas City, October 24 (World Weather Inc.) – Many winter grain and oilseed areas in Russia, Ukraine, and western Kazakhstan saw a mix of rain and sunshine during the past week. Some areas received enough rain to bolster soil moisture while others continued a little too dry. Additional widespread precipitation is needed to more completely moisten the soil and improve winter crop establishment after weeks of limited precipitation. Another week to ten days of periodic rain and sunshine is expected and this time the precipitation should be better distributed so that all crop areas benefit fully. The precipitation should induce better establishment and long-term development potentials.
