No U.S. Crop Damage Suspected From This Week’s Cold

Kansas City, December 5 (World Weather Inc.) – An early-bout of winter air impacted the main agricultural areas in the United States in recent days. Temperatures plummeted below zero degrees Fahrenheit in much of the northern Plains into areas as far south as Iowa, Wisconsin, northern Nebraska, and portions of the central Midwest. These areas were generally blanketed by snow ahead of the coldest air and no damage occurred to winter crops. Late-season fieldwork likely came to a standstill due to the snow. Another blast of arctic air will impact portions of the northern Plains and Midwest through early next week with another round of cold air possible toward the end of next week. These areas should have enough snow to protect any winter crops that are in the ground.

N. America Warming Next Week; More Cold Mid To Late Month

Kansas City, December 5 (World Weather Inc.) – Mid-November stratospheric warming induced the recent bout of bitter cold in North America. Another short term bout of bitter cold is expected in the north-central United States and Canada’s eastern Prairies Sunday into Monday followed by a short term bout of warming. However, a secondary polar vortex is expected to evolve near Hudson Bay in northeastern Canada late next week and once that feature is in place the potential is high for returning bitter cold into the central United States during the middle part of the month before shifting into the eastern states and eastern Canada a few days later. There is some indication that the cold will be around into the week of Christmas inducing more snow and a strong energy demand for the Midwest and eastern parts of North America.
