Freezes Impact South Texas, Louisiana Citrus And Sugarcane

Kansas City, January 27 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and freezes reached into northeastern Mexico, southern Texas and along most of the Louisiana and Florida Panhandle coasts this morning as a great culmination to the past several days of unusually intense winter weather in the central and eastern United States. Damage to citrus and sugarcane was suspected in both Texas and Louisiana, although the impact should not be tremendous unless poor weather occurs during the spring and summer.

Brazil Will See Expansion Of Rain; More Needed In South

Kansas City, January 27 (World Weather Inc.) – Far Southern Brazil and areas north into portions of Mato Grosso do Sul and Sao Paulo were either dry or received limited rain during the past week. Aggressive drying was noted with many areas already short to very short of moisture in the topsoil. Waves of precipitation will gradually return to most locations in the coming days and should restore some of the moisture that was recently lost to evaporation. However, many areas in Rio Grande do Sul, western sections of Santa Catarina and Parana, and southern Mato Grosso do Sul will not receive enough rain to completely fix the moisture deficits. The need for timely rain will be high into mid-February. Other production areas in center-west, center-south, and northeastern Brazil saw several waves of rain during the past week. With more precipitation on the way this week, conditions for the coarse grains and oilseeds will remain favorable. Early-season Safrinha corn planting will advance around the rain as well.

Argentina Will Continue To Struggle With Warm, Dry Weather

Kansas City, January 26 (World Weather Inc.) – Argentina’s weather was influenced by a strong high-pressure ridge during the past week. While disturbances tracking over the ridge brought rain to La Pampa, western Buenos Aires, and portions of Cordoba and San Luis, other production areas in Argentina were dry or mostly dry. The moisture profile is highly variable with many areas in the Pampas farming region already dry or critically dry. A large section of crop country will remain drier and warmer than usual this week as well, which will continue to promote aggressive drying. The only areas that will receive timely rain will be the westernmost production areas in Cordoba, Santiago del Estero, San Luis, and La Pampa. The environment will deteriorate for coarse grains, oilseeds, and cotton in a large section of Argentina outside the western production areas. Production potentials may be reduced, most notably in the driest areas of Buenos Aires, Entre Rios, and Santa Fe.
