Inside this issue of the Canadian Prairies Agricultural Weather Prognosticator is a detailed discussion of the various atmospheric influences on our atmosphere for October and November. El Nino will be one driver of our weather while the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation will also play a role at times. The official weather outlook for these two months is included in this issue along with some assessments of crop and soil conditions for various regions around the world.

U.S. Southeast Cotton Threatened By Big Rain Event

Kansas City, October 2 (World Weather, Inc.) – The recent, and in many cases, extended, stretch of dry weather in the southeastern states and the Delta has allowed for a good start to cotton harvest with other crops seeing rapid harvest progress as well. That will change today as an influx of moisture from the Gulf of America interacts with cooler air moving southward across the region resulting in several days of showers and thunderstorms. Follow-up rain events Oct. 10-12 and Oct. 13-15 will be closely monitored and if they occur as advertised cotton will likely suffer from quality declines with boll rot and the stringing of cotton fibers from the boll possible as well.

Western Europe Drought Relief Has A Long Way To Go

Kansas City, October 2 (World Weather Inc.) – A weak and disorganized upper-level disturbance will meander around Western Europe through the end of next week. This disturbance will bring much-needed rain to the Iberian Peninsula and portions of central and southern France. Not enough rain will fall to break the drought and additional rain will still be needed, but it will be nice start for some areas. Northern France, southern England, and neighboring areas in mainland Western Europe will also miss out on much of the rain and moisture shortages will prevail. Winter grain and oilseed planting and establishment prospects will improve in areas that receive the most rain; though, more rain will be needed for better long-term production potentials. Southeastern Europe will otherwise remain too dry for favorable prospects for winter grains and oilseeds. Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and neighboring areas will have opportunities for erratic rain through the end of next week while other areas in southeastern Europe continue to dry down.

Late September Rain A Boon For U.S. Hard Red Winter Wheat

Kansas City, October 2 (World Weather, Inc.) – After a tough start to the planting season in September when temperatures were hot and the soil was short of moisture, rain and cooler temperatures induced dramatic improvements in the prospects for hard red winter wheat during the second half of the month. Planting will be sluggish during the next few days as fields dry down after recent rain, but with dry weather expected often from now through the middle of the month, planting should soon become aggressive. Good soil moisture in place today and favorable temperatures through the next week will allow germination and establishment to occur rapidly across the region.
