Australia Winter Crop Production May Be Impacted By El Nino

Kansas City, April 15 (World Weather Inc.) – Early-season planting of the winter wheat, barley, and canola begins late April or early May for Australia. The main production areas received near to above normal precipitation in March. However, many areas outside Victoria either did not receive enough rain to fix the moisture deficits or lost a significant amount of moisture since early April due to a lack of rain. Precipitation will remain limited through the middle of next week and drier than normal weather may prevail through the end of April. With El Nino on the horizon, which tends to suppress rainfall in the spring and summer over eastern parts of the nation, there will be great need for crops to be planted and established well this season. Falling Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) values in the March/April period tend to be followed by lighter than usual May through July precipitation in the south.

U.S. Hard Red Wheat Country Dry For Another Week

Kansas City, April 15 (World Weather Inc.) – Drought is intensifying across the U.S. central and southern Plains. A significant amount of the hard red winter wheat is rated poor or very poor and there is a pressing need for rain. The High Plains region will remain mostly dry through the middle of next week with temperatures often running above or well above normal for this time of year. Eastern sections of Oklahoma and Kansas will see periods of rain and thunderstorms that will alleviate some of the dryness, though not enough to completely fix the drought. Wheat conditions will likely deteriorate and the need for abundant rain will remain high heading into early May. There is some potential for some rain briefly in the second half of next week. Planting conditions for the cotton, corn, and other summer crops may also be less than favorable to poor in West Texas and other areas in the High Plains region until significant rain fells.
