U.S. Freezes Tonight Through Tuesday To Impact Agriculture

Kansas City, April 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Cold temperatures occurred Thursday and Friday mornings in the U.S. Pacific Northwest impacting some deciduous fruit trees as well as small grains and a few other crops. The cold was not that usual for mid-April, but given all of the warmth that has been around in recent weeks the impact may have been a little greater than usual. The same cold airmass will trek across the contiguous United States tonight through Monday night inducing more frost and freeze events and possibly inducing additional crop damage. Most of the impact should be greatest on flowering fruit trees and shrubs, but there maybe some negative impact on winter wheat in hard red winter wheat areas in the western high Plains region as well.

Beyond The Hype of “Super El Nino”

Kansas City, April 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Once again, the infamous media has managed to take a natural cycle in the earth’s atmosphere and present it as if it was an event that will be worse than ever before. The event is El Nino and because it is expected to develop rapidly and become very strong there has been a tendency for the media to over exaggerate its impact. The advertised ENSO (El Nino/Southern Oscillation) event has been predicted to be one of the strongest seen in recent history, but the difference between a “super” El Nino and strong one is miniscule and there is no need for the hype. The evolution into El Nino will be swift and its intensity impressive eventually, but the impact on the earth may not be as dramatic as implied by some of the hype

Severe Weather Outbreak To Impact The Central U.S. Today

Kansas City, April 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Significant severe thunderstorm activity is expected today from central Oklahoma northeast into Wisconsin, Illinois, and eastern Iowa. All modes of severe weather will occur with this including large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. The tornado concern is greatest from eastern Iowa into Wisconsin, the damaging wind threat is most significant from eastern Kansas into southeastern Iowa, and large hail will occur locally within this corridor. Damage to personal property is likely and potentially to some early season crop development too. Some areas of flash flooding will also occur and fieldwork delays will result.

Canada Prairies Fieldwork Off To Sluggish Start For Some

Kansas City, April 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Winter storms and periods of colder than normal weather in recent weeks limited early-season fieldwork for a large section of the Canadian Prairies. While the bulk of the planting does not usually occur until May, producers still take time ahead of normal planting dates to get fields and equipment ready for the upcoming season in April. The moisture will eventually be welcome and should promote good establishment conditions once the ground warms enough for planting. The Prairies will start to see more spring-like conditions late this weekend into next week and that may allow some fieldwork in snow-free areas. However, another winter storm system impacting the region Thursday and today will leave behind some fresh snow and a couple of colder an usual days further delaying the onset of fieldwork.

South Africa Rain To Disrupt Harvest, Raise Quality Concerns

Kansas City, April 16 (World Weather Inc.) – Another good week for late season summer crop development occurred in the heart of South Africa’s summer crop region this past week. Sufficient drying time occurred to support early maturing crops and their harvest while enough rain fell along with lingering subsoil moisture to support late season crop development. Yield potentials remain favorable with a larger than average corn crop expected. The main concern for the coming week is over the return of rainy weather with more frequent showers and thunderstorms expected to slow or stall fieldwork. The wet weather might also raise a little crop quality concern especially for open boll cotton and some sunseed. Waves of erratic rainfall are expected for at least the next seven days and that will maintain relatively favorable conditions for crops still developing.
