Central U.S. Facing Warmer Days; South Plains Hot

Kansas City, May 8 (World Weather Inc.) – Recent cold temperatures in the central United States have occurred as the atmosphere cycled through another episode of northerly winds aloft. Most of that cold will become concentrated on the northeastern parts of the nation and in neighboring areas of eastern Canada over the next week to ten days. In its wake will be some high-pressure ridge building aloft over the central parts of North America. This change will bring much warmer temperatures to central and western parts of North America and in particular the southern U.S. Plains, Great Basin and southwestern desert region. Hot temperatures are expected in parts of Texas and Oklahoma with some warmer than usual conditions expected to build into the remainder of the Great Plains as time moves along.

India Rain May Be Impacting Rabi Crop Harvest

Kansas City, May 7 (World Weather Inc.) – Unusually wet weather in recent weeks may have impacted harvesting of the rabi crop in portions of India. Rainfall in the past week was greatest in portions of eastern and southern India. In addition to the harvest and fieldwork delays, thunderstorms produced damaging hail in several states since the beginning of April. Minor production losses were suspected in some of the wheat, pulse, and other crop areas. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue over northern, eastern, and southern India during the coming week. The harvest may again be slowed or delayed due to the rain. Crop damage should be minimal.

South Africa Harvest Conditions Will Improve

Kansas City, May 7 (World Weather Inc.) – Wet weather was noted across the main production areas in South Africa during at least a portion of the past week. The rain may have slowed or even delayed maturation and early-season harvesting of the coarse grains, oilseeds, cotton, and other crops. No major quality or production impacts were suspected. Drier weather is now slated for much of crop country during the coming week. Maturation and harvest conditions will gradually improve as the ground firms. Yield potentials remain large for the upcoming season. Winter wheat and barley planting prospects are also favorable due to the amount of rain that fell in recent weeks.
